WHAT DOES A PIE CRUST HAVE TO DO WITH THE BIBLE?

Pie crusts are tricky things. They really are. The Bible? Not so much.

I’m good at following directions. No, I’m excellent. Outstanding. The perfectionist in me delights in carrying out well-laid out instructions.

Enters my mother-in-law. May her soul rest in peace.

Free from trying to impart to me the secrets of pie crust making.

Hopefully with no recollection of my efforts.

I love to bake. But I must have a recipe. Which I will follow as if it’s the Ten Commandments. Painstakingly.

I do not deal with “pinches” and “splashes” and “maybe.”

I need 1/8 tea spoon or 5 drops. Precise information.

My mother-in-law was a wizard in the kitchen. And made five-star pie crusts.

(Sidebar here. My sisters-in-law also inherited that gene. I guess it’s in the blood, so I don’t have a snowball’s chance anyway.)

I was going to have a lesson from a master.

I stood next to her. Ingredients lined up. Holding a measuring cup and spoon.

“Right,” she said, scooping a hand full of flour.

“Wait,” I howled. “How much is that? A full cup?”

I reached my cup under her hand to measure what she was going to drop into the mixing bowl.

She gave me a sideways glance. Pushed my cup out of the way and reached for the salt.

“A good pinch of salt,” she said.

I howled again, reaching out with my teaspoon.

And so it went. A pinch of this, a dash of that, a smidgen, a couple of drops….

I admitted defeat. Watched as she deftly molded a pie crust.

“How hot an oven and for how long do you bake it?” Me again.

She didn’t even look up, pushing little thumb prints along the edge.

“Medium oven until done,” she said.

She made me five pie crusts which I froze and treated like gold. Which it was.

Mom is long gone now. Her efforts to teach me how to make pie crusts is one of the Captain’s favorite anecdotes at my expense.

No, I need very definite instruction on how to do what I need to do.

I’m not the “winging” type.

But I sometimes I have a hard time following some basic instructions in the best recipe book for Life.

The B.I.B.L.E.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE LEAVING EARTH.

It’s very precise. Nowhere a pinch of this and a dash of that!

Cyber Hugs and Blessings All. Get out those instructions.
