THERE’S SOMETHING TO BE SAID FOR BEING PREPARED

Five seconds. I was five seconds too late. It might as well have been five hours. A hawk swooped over the house and landed in the tree right in front of me. I reached for my phone but by the time I had it set to camera, the hawk tipped a wing at me and flew off.

Maybe I’ll get that close again. Maybe not. Lesson here. Find the speed setting to change from phone to camera. But in my defense –

Who thought a hawk would land in my garden?

Worse was to come. This time I was lazing on the front deck of the boat with a book, phone nearby, with camera setting on, in case one of the pelicans landed on a nearby piling.

Mad squawking to starboard jerked me upright.

Down in the water a pelican and a sea gull were having a tug of war over a piece of fish gut.

(That delicacy had drifted down from where the fishermen clean the daily catch.)

Scrabble, fumble, camera oh camera where art though! Hidden underneath a towel for protection from the sun. And once again I was too late.

The pelican slurped down the entrails, a miffed sea gull looking on and another Kodak moment lost. I probably could have sold that photo.

Oops. No excuse. Be ready, be vigilant. We have no idea when our Lord will return.
