The Well is Dry

Drought. Feared by all. Whether you are dependent for water on a lake, river, estuary, reservoir, de-salinization of the ocean, fountain, rain or a well, you cannot survive without water.

I’m a farmer’s daughter and in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, where I hail from, farmers could not rely solely on the sporadic and fickle rainfall. I clearly recall “’n Biddag vir Reën” – A day set aside in church and everyone would go to pray for rain. God would say yes, or not yet. In the meantime life went on, livestock and crops alike needed water so boreholes had to be drilled.

Oh, the excitement to my little girl self when the “waterwyser” (water diviner) arrived with his divining rod, (just an old forked stick to my child eyes) to search for, and hopefully find, the right spot to drill. I’d follow him around, really wishing I could try out his “stick.” It obviously wasn’t allowed.

And the drilling would start. If not too far away, I would lie in bed and hear the far-off “doef-doef-doef” as the drill hammered through the rock. Finally, there it was – life-giving water. Sometimes it would be plentiful; sometimes it would be a trickle. And sometimes there would be nothing, the drilling would become too costly, so, the overseer would call it a day.

Saddest of all would be when all had been well, sometimes for years, and one day my dad would say, “die boorgat is droog.” (The borehole is dry)

We’ve all been there. “I can’t go on, Lord. I’m tired, I’m sick, I’m drained, I’m sad, miserable, confused, depressed, no-one understands, no-one cares.” But then, remember.

John 4:14  New King James Version (NKJV)

“but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Then, there’s my personal dilemma which can turn into paralyzing fear.  This is way beyond the infamous Writer’s Block.

“Lord, I’m empty. I have nothing to say. How am I going to write three meaningful blogs this week and the next and the next and the next…?” Comes the answer:

“Well really, my child.”

Psalm 105:41

“He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
It ran in the dry places like a river.”

Yup, that rock that is my brain and my creativity. You’d better believe that He opens it, daily, all the time, as needed.

So blessed. So grateful.
