OH YE OF LITTLE FAITH…..
I woke early.
Happily anticipating a day doing my favorite things.
I burrowed deeper. The dogs clamoring for their morning cuddle.
A quick glimpse at my watch said 5.45 am and dear Lord,
My stomach plummeted. My good mood soured.
I voted two weeks ago. A mail-in ballot. Now it was wait and see.
Coffee. I needed coffee.
I picked up the newspaper. A journalist had quoted Alexis Tocqueville. Something he wrote 170 years ago.
“Democracy does not give the most skillful government to the people, but it does what the most skillful government is powerless to create; it spreads a restive activity through the whole social body, a super- force, and energy that never exists without it.”
I couldn’t find the quote to verify but it does sound like something Tocqueville would’ve said.
And then there’s the other phrase he coined. “
“The Tyranny of the Majority.”
I had to get a grip, both on the day and one myself. So, I did what I always do when in a tight spot.
I took myself off to our church. Hoping to sit quietly and find peace.
A peek in the door showed a mass waiting to begin. At 11.00 am on a Tuesday?
“A funeral,” the priest waiting outside told me.
“But go in. It’s okay.”
The mass started. The entrance hymn was one of my favorites.
AND HE WILL RAISE YOU UP ON EAGLES WINGS….
I sat quietly.
The mass continued. The cantor a lady with a silver-sweet voice intoned Psalm 27.
THE LORD IS MY LIGHT AND MY SALVATION.
I left. Wondering why on earth I’m worried when I know Who ultimately is in control.”
