I’m blessed with an amazing daughter-in-law.

She’s beautiful, smart, talented, hard-working and an incredible mother.

But when I’m asked about her, the first thing that comes to mind is her laugh and her ability to tell a story.

Emy doesn’t have a lady-like titter, a horsey neigh or a bellow to lift you out of your seat.

Oh no, it’s far more insidious. It starts as a sort of gurgle and works its way into a full belly laugh. Her eyes are tearing, they close, her shoulders are shaking, the sheer joy infects you and yup, you join in.

You can’t stop yourself any more than you can stop breathing.

The story she’s telling comes to a halt as she gasps for control to continue.

By now everyone has gathered around, eager to share in the fun.

The room seems brighter. The mood lighter. Her joy fills every corner. Even the dogs come over.

Good stories. Belly laughs.

And off my mind goes.

The disciples faithfully recorded the Parables our Lord taught and the Miracles He wrought. Why is there no account of His humor?

I’m convinced He had a wonderful sense of the ridiculous and a laugh that would set of everyone.

His laughter would never have been unkind. He never laughed at people. He laughed with them.

There must have been incidents that were funny, definitely comical.

He was fully human. He walked and talked and ate and slept and experienced all the emotions of His humanity.

Why was none of His humor recorded?

  • I visualize Him as a tiny baby, gurgling at Mary.

  • As a toddler, dimpled smiles and giggles.

  • As a young boy, laughing at his younger siblings’ antics.

  • As a teenager.  Reserved. Self-assured. Shy smiles.

  • As a young man. Twinkling eyes. Gentle humor.

I finally visualize Him with His disciples on the beach. The day’s catch grilling on an open fire.

Good natured teasing. Peter poking fun at James for fumbling a net. The others join in. Jesus has the last word with some wonderful line. His laughter echoes across the lapping waves and ocean sounds.

The wind carries it further. People stop. Perk up. Smile.

They have no idea Who is laughing. But it sounds so happy. It makes them feel good.

Yes, I’m convinced our Lord loved a good yarn and a belly laugh.

After all, He was IN this world, even if not OF this world.

I can only imagine how much joy this Flash Mob performance would have given our Lord.

Cyber Hugs and Blessings All.

Ode to Joy.

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.
